The Obverse Side of God
How can you explain a Christian, Godly Society whose tenets are based on truth, honesty, respect for the opposite sex, moral orthodoxy, constitutional correctness, decency towards colleagues, support of subordinates, human dignity, really, how do you account for that society having half of its members placing their undiluted confidence and support in an individual offering himself as a candidate for the highest political office in their country, being fully aware of the fact that that individual’s conduct is, has always been and plans to be in the future, diametrically opposite to their principles. I mean, really, how do you explain it?
Now, let us assume that this uncharacteristic offering as President wins. Will our nation be comfortable with him as our representative to other nations? Will we trust his leadership style, his sometimes-unpredictable protocol observances, his bluster, his love of all powerful leaders. Do we really think that he has the discipline to be trusted with secret codes?
I trust that God knows what he is doing. I believe that God has thrown this obverse side of herself at the dyed in the wool Christian to expose their thin beliefs.
On the other hand it might be that the candidate speaks a policy language that the Christian Right believes in more strongly than it does in Christian religious morality. Maintain white hegemony, keep brown and black immigration down, suppress the vote where possible and make the path clear for different levels of citizenships. Maybe we should try to find out how the ancient Romans handled this particular problem, and what happened to their first Emperor..
There is biblical reference points in all this. Isn’t there talk of false prophets coming forward and bamboozling good Christian folk with tests of their commitments? Are we seeing the obverse side of God? And isn’t there some cruel irony in having an outstanding prosecutor and moral paragon facing off with a convicted felon for the Presidency of the most powerful country on the planet earth.
If it weren’t so serious I would think that we are victims of a cruel joke.
